Completed circa 1820 by Isaiah Davenport, a mobile artisan, for his growing family and the homes servants. The home is based on the American Federal-style building and is 6,800 square feet with a basement level and a courtyard garden. Threatened with demolition in 1955, a group of community-spirited citizens joined forces to purchase the Davenport House. Throughout its 50+ years as a historic site, the Davenport House Museum has treated visitors to intriguing and vivid experiences centered on legendary Savannah-centric tales of courage and determination. This historic home marked the beginning of Savannah's historic preservation movement. The house is situated on Columbia Square at the corner of State and Habersham Streets in the Historic District of Savannah.
