McQueen's Island Historic Trail

Built on a stretch of the Savannah and Atlantic Railroad line, this six-mile gravel trail called the "McQueen's Island Trail" offers a scenic, salt-air excursion for nature lovers and history buffs alike.  Built in 1887, the railroad carried passengers from Savannah to Tybee Island, a popular turn-of-the-century beach resort.  A highway to the island was built in 1923, leading to the demise of the railroad.  You can walk, jog or even bike down this historic scenic path.  While the trail parallels the South Channel of the Savannah River, a major shipping route, be on the lookout for various wildlife including dolphins frolicking in the river.

Note:  Plan to call 912-652-6780 prior to visiting the trail.  The 2016 (Matthew) and 2017 (Irma) hurricanes caused significant erosion to the trail and parts could be under construction.
