Free admission for Ft. Pulaski:
Located just west of Tybee Island off of Hwy 80 is Fort Pulaski, built between 1829 and 1847.During the Civil War, Union forces camped on Tybee Island and fired their powerful new cannons at the fort, damaging it severely and making brick forts obsolete worldwide. Fort Pulaski is a fine example of historic military architecture. Along with its exhibits, Fort Pulaski offers an abundance of outdoor activities including hiking, biking on a several great nature trails located around the fort. You can also enjoy bird watching, identifying plant life and fishing.
Fort and Visitor Center Hours: 9am-5pm. Cockspur Island Bridge closes at 5:15pm daily.
The National Park Service offers FREE admission to ALL parks, monuments and historic sites (whether or not connected to the Civil War) that normally charge an admission fee on the following dates during 2020:
—April 18 – First Day of National Park Week & National Junior Ranger Day
—August 25 – National Park Service Anniversary
—September 26 – National Public Lands Day
—November 11 – Veterans Day
Fort Pulaski National Monument is Savannah’s National Park. The fort, one of the nation’s best preserved nineteenth century coastal forts, was the site of a significant artillery battle during the American Civil War. The park offers breathtaking architecture, stellar panoramic views, and miles of trails to explore. Once here, feel free to experience a ranger led fort tour, catch a cannon firing, or enjoy the island at your own pace. There’s something for the entire family to enjoy!
