Things To Do At Home For Fun

We are all faced with the challenge of overcoming our need for social interactions – and to maintain a safe social distance. While for some, this has been a task they have been training for all their lives (I’m looking at you, introverts), but for others, this task of socially isolating seems downright daunting. In theory, it may sound like a gift to be given “stay home,” but in reality – we can feel frustrated by this notion. Whatever your reason for being ‘at home’ is, wouldn’t it be great if you could find a new way to entertain yourself, and your loved ones. Whether it is a need to entertain a family, or simply keep the romantic spark alive, think creatively, and come up with a new way to spend quality time together.

Here are some unique ways to spend the days, nights, or weekends together:

Movie Night

Gather together for a night of entertainment. Choose a Movie Theme – 80’s Chic Flicks, Harry Potter Marathon, Fast and Furious franchise, or what about a movie marathon of recent movies filmed on location in Savannah or Tybee Island. We have a great list of suggestions, sure to please everyone in your family. Check out all the movies here. Pop some popcorn, grab a blanket, hit play, and enjoy!

Game Night

What is your family’s ‘go-to’ game for game night? Do you bring it way back, OLD SCHOOL, for a rousing game of Scrabble? Are you and your sister or brother famous for your ESP ability for charades? Or, does your family prefer a modern-day twist on family game night and do “Heads Up” or sit around together and play “Words with Friends.” Or maybe your group prefers card games, Uno, Gin Rummy, or 5 Card Stud.

Themed Dinner Nights

Get creative and take your regular dinner at home to the next level. Maybe Taco Tuesday – can become a South of the Border Mexican Fiesta – complete with freshly squeezed lime juice for Margaritas, Slow-cooked pork, and grilled corn for some authentic Carnitas y Elote. Or, take a trip to the Big Easy, complete with some Red Beans and Rice, Crawfish Etouffe’ or Gumbo and top it off with Beignets for dessert and can’t forget to quench your thirst with a Hurricane. And to be honest, you don’t even have to be a great cook to enjoy fresh, homemade cooking while you are at home.

Many restaurants offer take out and delivery. If you are not as talented in the kitchen, set a perfect table with your best dinnerware and cut some fresh flowers to make a pretty table spread. Then, when your take out meal is ready, trade in the to-go plates for fancy serving dishes… that way, it feels fancier – you can even take the credit for the lavish meal, just be sure to dispose of the take out evidence.

Decadent Dessert Bake-off Competition

In the style of the “Great British Bake Off” or your favorite TV Baking show, bring your talents to the kitchen to create a decadent dessert masterpiece that will WOW your housemates! Perfect Grandma’s Chocolate Chip Cookies, or make an Apple Pie make your neighbors weep with envy. Better yet, scour the internet for the “BEST…. ” whatever. Whatever tickles your sweet tooth fancy, now is the perfect time to perfect it.
Try one of our favorites from Mary Kay Andrew’s “Beach House Cookbook” – Chocolate Panna Cotta with Strawberry Coulis.

Spa Day / Spa Night

Treat yourself! Take some time to pamper yourself or your loved one. In this time of considerable uncertainty and being homebound, we can sometimes lose sight of ourselves. Take a moment to check-in and center yourself. Host a Spa Day or Night. Relax in a bubble bath with soft lit candles and a glass of wine. Relieve stress with aromatherapy and some soft music. Paint your nails, paint your toes. Paint your partner’s toes. Do a facial mask. Do whatever you think will relax you. Take some time to care of yourself.

Home Project

Tackle your Honey-Do list, or finally, do that home improvement project or DIY dream makeover you’ve wanted to find the time to do. Make a big project achievable by breaking it into smaller tasks to make it far less daunting. Maybe it is just to clean out closets that have been accumulating junk over the years. Donate unused items to charitable centers – one person’s trash is truly a treasure to another. Plant a flower bed or vegetable garden. Make your home a retreat and relieve stress at the same time. Experts agree that plants offer physical and emotional benefits – they boost Air quality and improve mood by reducing stress and anxiety.
