Principles of Design

When you understand the basic interior design principles you can transform any space to look fabulous. You know what it feels like when you walk into a well-designed room. You can sense how everything feels cohesive and put together. It feels just right. Understanding the fundamental interior design principles can help you create a beautiful space.

The Basics

First things first: when creating a well-designed room, there are 5 basic principles of design to consider: Balance, Repetition, Emphasis, Proportion, and Scale. Knowing how to incorporate one or all of these design elements into your space will enhance the final look of your design. During this HGTVR series, we will explain all five of these principles so you too can become a design pro! Stay up to date with our HGTVR series by joining our email list!

Let's Learn - Repetition

Let’s discuss Repetition and how it relates to Interior Design. Similar to how rhythm forms the backbone of music with its repetitive beats, rhythm in interior design uses repeated elements to carry to eye around the room. As with balance, there are a few different paths you can take to apply rhythm to a room. One of the easiest ways to illustrate this principle is by using the same materials, colors, patterns, textures, lines, or any other element more than once in a space. For example, you can achieve rhythm by using a similar color in pillows, accessories, rugs, and artwork throughout your room or home. The repetition of similar colors helps create a sense of flow and cohesiveness.

Bring it to Life

Need some visual examples of Repetition? Let’s discuss how our Design Services pros showed Repetition through the images of our vacation rentals featured in this blog.

The living room of follows a blue color theme. Repetition is shown by maintaining similar color shades and textures throughout the design. For a more forward use of repetition, look at the pillows on the couch and the lamps on the side tables. For a more subtle use of repetition, notice the similar texture in the rug, the pillows, and the photo on the wall.

Beach Digs is such a fun property! In keeping with the “coastal” theme, you will see different forms of stripes featured throughout the living room. Take a closer look at the frames on the wall, and notice how they are a repeat of the striped accent chairs.

The outdoor space at 2nd to None is unmatched. Our Design Services team worked to incorporate similar colors and textures to create a rhythm in the design. In the photo below, you’ll see lots of blues and greens presented in different forms.

You’ll pick up on fun presentations of repetition on the patio bar at High Tide. Our team used the same shade of blue in different ways to create cohesiveness. See the bar chairs, classic fridge, wall art, and even the pillows on the sectional.
